Fort Nelson

Fort Nelson

The small town of Wickham is perfectly situated in the heart of Hampshire. Overlooking the Solent it is one of the most popular venues to visit while in the area. Fort Nelson is one of five defensive , housing their collection of artillery.

The fully restored Victorian fort is open to the public to explore and enjoy the many events which have been designed to demonstrate the history of British military precision. Guests can explore over 19 acres of ramparts, outer fortifications, secret underground tunnels, and ammunition bunkers.

The venue is open daily from 10:00 – 17:00 and offers exciting events for the whole family to enjoy.

We know that you will enjoy discovering what life was like for soldiers in the Victorian garrison’s barrack rooms, hospital and kitchen. We recommend that you don’t miss ‘Voice of the guns’. Here you will experience how artillery, both small and large, shaped world history for over 500 years.

One comment on TripAdvisor said: ‘It is free to enter also which is very good. There was a Poppy display which was very well done. Lovely views on both sides from the Fort, – looking over Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight and across the valley to the north.’

Visiting Fort Nelson Royal Armouries is a brilliant way to honour the military achievements of Britain. The displays and events not only display the military strength of today, but also give detailed insight into the lives of those who fought so bravely for our country over the years. Your donations while visiting Fort Nelson will help towards the upkeep of the Armouries.

Bill Baily has been a regular in popular television productions such as ‘Never mind the Buzcocks’, ‘Spaced’ and ‘Black Books’. He is also no stranger to the big screen. Many will remember  his portrayal of Sergeant Turner in the 2007 smash hit HOT FUZZ with Simon Peg: ‘Nobody tells me nothing!’

Wickham Beer Festival

Wickham Beer Festival

The Wickham Beer Festival will be held at the Wickham Centre on Friday 13 April from 19:00 –  23:00. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the festival which has grown in size ever since its inception. Make sure you arrive with an empty stomach and your dancing shoes as there will be Beer, Blues and Curry available for you to enjoy.

The evening’s entertainment will be supplied by Burnt Ice, Portsmouth’s longest running blues band, led by Andy Broad. The band has been ‘singing the blues’ since 1987…and they still have the blues. Their well-received EP was recorded in 2010 which featured a unique brand of blues sound and featured both original material and a few old classics.

This year the support has grown to impressive levels offering beer lovers the opportunity to taste a wide range of local beers, ales and ciders. These include Jester’s Tear, Sign of Spring, Triple XXX, Dragonfly and Rum Cask Cider.

The festival would not have been possible without the support of local businesses; these include Westlands Farm Shop, Studio 6 and B+B Wickham. We are very proud to be part of the sponsorship team and thoroughly recommend visiting the Wickham Beer Festival to enjoy a pint.

The Wickham Festival

The Wickham Festival

The Wickham Festival will once again grace our beautiful town bringing much excitement to the local population. The festival will take place from 2 – 5 August 2018 and offers a plethora of festive delights for the whole family to enjoy.  Over the years, the ever-popular festival has grown in size. This year promises to be bigger and better than any of its predecessors.

Every year the quiet town of Wickham explodes in a festive spectacle. The tremendous support of the local community has not gone unnoticed resulting in bigger bands gracing the main stage every year.

The growing radius of the Wickham Festival’s popularity has in turn drawn larger crowds over the years. The organisers have given greater attention to online marketing which has had a positive impact on the numbers. This has been well received by local business.

This year audiences can enjoy bands such as STEVE HARLEY AND COCKNEY REBEL, SQUEEZE, KATE RUSBY and RICHARD THOMPSON ELECTRIC TRIO.

SQUEEZE

The big name of course is SQUEEZE who will be headlining the festival on Saturday 4 August. The band first started in Deptford, London in 1974 when band members Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook started writing together. The bands line-up has included well-known performers such as Jools Holland on keys, Harry Kakouli on bass and Paul Gunn on drums.  By 1977 the band had made its recording debut and had a number of hits until 1982 during the New Wave period.

Poetry

Robbie Burns is known for his eloquent and thought-provoking poetry. Many of our readers will remember the famous poem by Robbie Burns: ‘To a mouse, on turning her up in her nest with the plough (1785)’.

Here the narrator expresses his feelings after he accidentally breaks apart a mouse’s nest with his plough. Burns expertly moves the reader from empathising with the little animal to pondering man’s relationship with the natural world and even the future of humanity.

The best-laid schemes o’ mice an ‘men
Gang aft agley,
An’lea’e us nought but grief an’ pain,
For promis’d joy!
