Wickham festival 2017

Every year in August, the quiet little town of Wickham is transformed into a magical musical spender for all to enjoy. The Wickham festival, Hampshire’s very on ‘Brigadoon’, appears out of nowhere with a plethora of festivities and musical performances.

The entire town is transformed into a mini Glastonbury with friendly local faces welcoming old and new friends to enjoy the festivities. There are plenty of stalls and eateries available for the whole family.

The main attraction is most definitely the music. This year we are proud to announce that the Wickham festival will be graced (to name a few) by KT Tunstall, 10cc, Seth Lakeman, the Levellers, and last but not least, 3 Daft Monkeys.

It’s not all about the music though. There is a digital funfair, playbus, laser arena, bouncy castles and children’s entertainers – and all are free once people are in the festival arena! Enjoy the entertainers who wander freely for your amusement or try out our giant deckchair – then take a pic and tweet it to us @festivalwickham

Finding the festival could not be easier. On arrival in Wickham, just follow the yellow ‘Festival’ direction signs to Blind Lane – or make use of the free shuttle bus between Wickham Square and the Festival site during daytime hours. There is plenty of free parking right next to the festival site with 24-hour security.

Tickets are available via the website (www.wickhamfestival.co.uk). Save £20 on every Weekend Season Ticket by booking Tier 3 Early bird Weekend Season Tickets by June 30 for £140 each instead of the £160 full price.

Jimmy Carr – The best of, ultimate gold, greatest hits tour

Jimmy Carr best of, ultimate gold, greatest hits tour

Jimmy Carr

Jimmy Carr: Best of, ultimate gold, greatest hits tour

He’s won the British Comedy Award for ‘Best Live Stand-Up Tour’ and been nominated for the Perrier Award. Now all that experience is being put to good use – you can see all the greatest material from his extraordinary career in one show – this is the very best of Jimmy Carr.

A firm favourite on stage and screen, Jimmy has delighted audiences with his cutting-edge one-liners, razor sharp wit and deadpan delivery for more than a decade. Don’t be fooled by his cheesy grin though, this funny man has a lot of bite.

The life of Jimmy Car

After becoming established as a stand-up comedian, Carr began to appear in a number of Channel 4 television shows, becoming the host of the panel show 8 Out of 10 Cats and also The Big Fat Quiz of the Year, a comedy panel show that airs each December to review the past year.

Jimmy is one of the hardest working stand-up comedians in the UK today. He has been known to perform stand-up tours continuously over the course of the year, taking only five weeks off between them.

Jimmy Carr has always been able to think outside of the box. In 2006, he was the first major comedian to perform in the virtual reality world known as Second Life. For those of you who don’t know, Second Life is an online virtual world which is populated, developed and grown by the users who frequent the website. Jimmy performed his live stand-up routine which was then projected into a digital environment (Second life) for people to enjoy across the globe.

No successful career in the lime light is without some form of controversy. In 2012 Jimmy was allegedly involved in a tax avoidance scheme. Considering the amount of media pressure, Carr reprised his position as one of the top comedy acts in the country, growing from strength to strength.

Laugh out loud

Jimmy will be performing at the Mayflower theatre, Southampton on Sun 23rd April at 7:30pm. If you are planning a trip to Southampton, we would like to invite you as our guests to stay at B+B Wickham. Warwick Lane indoor market: Russell Flint Pictures and Athena Fayres

Whether you are a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveller to the civil parish of Wickham, there are a few wonderful attractions to take advantage of. Situated in the centre of this historic village is the Wickham Square which serves as its business hub. The Square is surrounded by restaurants, coffee shops and accommodation.

The Warwick Lane indoor market

The Warwick Lane indoor market is situated to the right of the Square. Filled with shops, antiques and jewellery stores, this beautiful boutique shopping center is a delight to experience. If you enjoy shopping for that unique, hand crafted gift or relaxing in the coffeehouse – with a slice of cake, obviously – this is an experience like no other.

Named after Richard Warwick and his wife Joyce Lane, hence ‘Warwick Lane’, the building is steeped in history. The building has been in the Warwick family for about 125 years and holds regular events such as antique fairs, art sales and many more.

Russell Flint Pictures – 4 March 2017

This month the Warwick Lane indoor market features the printed art works of Sir William Russell Flint. The art works will be displayed for appreciation and potential purchase. Some of the prints will feature the signature of the late artist who is widely respected as the greatest watercolour painter of the last century. The notable support for antiques and collectables in Wickham is due the fact that Wickham has maintained its authenticity over the last few centuries. Wickham’s ancient market square comes to life in December! After the Christmas lights extravaganza on 4th December, you can indulge in shopping throughout the village. Whether you are looking for fashion, chocolates or antiques, there is a host of local, independent boutiques waiting to welcome you in.

On Boxing day the square comes alive with the gentle thrum of classic car engines. The vintage and American car rally starts early, so this is a lovely way to walk off your Christmas dinner and see some unique motors.

The parish church of St Nicholas will be holding 2 services on Christmas Eve. The first at 4pm is a Christingle celebration, especially for families. Midnight Communion will start from 11.15pm. On Christmas Day, the family Holy Communion is held at 10am.

On New Year’s Eve the Wickham Centre hosts a local dance party, so be prepared to bop until you drop!

Why we love Autumn (And not just because we’re offering 20% off…)

After the disappointment of our ‘summer’, we begin to watch the evenings close in with a shiver… However, we here at B+B LOVE the autumn, and here’s why:

  1. The weather. Hear me out. Cold, crisp mornings and sunsets that bask the country in a beautiful orange glow. Where better to indulge than striding along the Meon Valley?
  2. Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness… Autumn brings out a beautiful colour change at Hinton Ampner country house & park, featuring incredible variety of ancient flora and rare fauna. Autumn walks start on 24th October, and dogs are welcome!
  3. Yes, you chaps in the US do Hallowe’en much better than us Brits. However, we have 5th November, and Gosport’s Museum of Naval Firepower offers free admission, a fun fair… and some serious explosions! Penny for the guy, Guv’nor?
  4. It’s harvest time! Hampshire is the place to be, whether you are attending a traditional harvest festival, browsing in a farmers’ market or learning to make cider.
  5. Gingerbread lattes. And mulled wine. And hearty stews. Forget summer’s sparkling water and salads – after being out and about on our stunning countryside all day, it’s all about hearty fare. The Old House launches its new a la carte menu in Autumn; expect sensational seasonal fare bursting with local produce.
  6. Christmas shopping. People may groan when they hear the Selfridges opened their Christmas shop in July, but how many of us secret relish this opportunity for a bit of retail therapy… Hidden behind Wickham’s discreet frontages is a spectacular hive of vintage and antique shops – one day will not be enough!
  7. And speaking of shopping… Christmas markets begin to open at the end of November, so why not try Victoriana in Portsmouth, or ice skating in historic Winchester?

So how about it? Spectacular English countryside, cosy fire-lit pubs, and best of all, no holiday crowds! Wickham is waiting to beat the end-of-summer blues.

If you are planning a jaunt to heavenly Hampshire, book at B+B Wickham for 2 nights or more and receive 20% off your accommodation. Contact the hotel directly, or book online.
